My L-00 Model uses the basic shape of an early L-00 but I use my standard bracing pattern, more like a Martin with the X shifted closer to the sound hole. Works great.

To me, an L-OO wouldn't look right without a burst...

I'm building an L-1 guitar right now. I have the L-0 plans that LMI sells but I think they may be wrong. These guitars with the rounder shape were 13.5" on the lower bout but the plan show it at 14". I ended up getting a tracing from a real one. Gibson used a couple different bracing patters on these as well before they went to the x-braced L-00. I believe the style you see on the LMI plans is call "h" bracing. They also had something called "A" bracing which has a cross brace just behind the soundhole where you would normally have the X. So imagine if you cut the braces at the x and just put in a cross brace there and left everything in place below that.
For my guitar, I used the brace styles that I have seen in the L-00 guitars. They are 1/4", tapered from the bottom to the top and also tapered from the X to the ends. All in all left quite thin and light. My braces are splayed at about 95° between the lower legs while I think Gibsons may have been 90° (I may be wrong on that). I used a stiff sitka top and thinned it to .100" before any finish sanding and mahogany back and sides that were thinned to .075". It has a dovetail neck joint and the whole assembly is very light. I can't wait to string her up.

Hesh, over on the MIMF they have a set of plans that are based on the L-00 but they are x-braced. I just built one from those plans and I think it is going to be a pretty nice box. It is just hanging around for now, waiting on the lacquer to cure.

I believe that Mark Swanson drew those plans.

Give us a look at your L-OO when you get a chance, Dave.

I would use a binding material that contrasts the Tiger Myrtle. It's going to darken up a good bit under finish, and me thinks something like ivoroid bindings might be nice.

Hey do you know who the first OLFer to use Tiger Myrtle in their guitar was? Unless Shawn C used some, I'm guessing it was Lance. I gave him some a couple years back to use for cutting plugs to cever bolt holes in the neckblock. At that time, I don't know of anyone else who had any of that stuff.

An L-00 is my next project (if I ever get the current one done ). Maybe a 13-fret, maybe more depth. I had a 30s vintage one years ago. It was extremely light, with tall, skinny bracing that looked like they'd been shaped with a dull pocket knife. It was made with the crummiest wood I'd ever seen, but it had the most wonderful woody, dry sound.

Go for it buddy and I'll lend you a shovel to fill those pores , just kidding. What is that? I would use a black pore filler of somekind if your going to use a black top, that would visually really lock it all together.
There is nothing wrong with those iveroid tuner buttons, they are very traditional. I've been using National three on a plate tuners lately on my slothead Stella models, $70 and they work great, mind you they are not Waverly's but they work good and look the part for a vintage guitar.
If your going for a vintage look though I'd keep that rosette somewhat in check but if not then anything goes.John How38960.6067592593

Here is a different sort on finish that someone posted on another forum recently. A black finish whish somehow seems to have a white filler added. I guess you put down the black first and the fill and carefull sand back. I really don't know but it looks kinda cool.

Hesh, what about some zebrano (zebra wood) bindings? I saw some on ebay and they looked pretty neat. I bet it would provide enough contrast without being too white.

I agree, type out sunburst and dreadnought. If for no other reason, it will make the archives much easier to search.

Hesh...here's a pic of an L-OO made by the folks at Borges Guitars that was on display at the first Newport show. Notice the light bindings. Ivoroid, I believe.

Hesh, it's great that you got the plan from the MIMF, you'll like it. I have built quite a few from that design. I always have one in the works, and I love that size and shape!
I just finished up a curly redwood/walnut one with a cutaway that I will be taking up to the Wheatland festival next week. I hope I can show it to you sometime!
